The video is set in Montgomery, Alabama, with artist Michelle Browder discussing her sculpture honoring Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy. Historical Context: The sculpture commemorates three enslaved women (Anarcha, Lucy, Betsy) subjected to medical experiments by Dr. Marion Sims in the 19th century to cure vesicovaginal fistula.. Dr. Marion Sims is known as the father of modern gynecology, conducted painful experiments without anesthesia on enslaved women, promoting his career while exploiting their bodies. False beliefs about black women's high pain tolerance were used to justify these brutal procedures, which were not performed on white women.
A proper burial is a ceremony that many of us take for granted, but that was not the case for African Americans for a large portion of history in the U.S. In the premiere of Ritual, Tank Ball explores the often overlooked history of Black burial in Louisiana. From a man honoring his duty as caretaker for his ancestors’ cemetery to a woman fighting to protect the sacred burial sites of her enslaved ancestors, we learn how one of the oldest rituals in history - taking care of the dead - became an act of resilience in the American South.
