Why We Whip: A Color Purple Reflection

“He beats me ’cause I ain’t you.”

That line slices deep because how many of us have felt the sting of someone else’s disappointment?

Sometimes, people “whip” us—not with belts, but with words, silence, criticism, or abandonment—because we don’t meet their expectations.

We didn’t shrink ourselves, bend, change, or become someone we were never created to be.

Other times, we are the ones holding the whip cutting into others with our judgments, frustrations, or unmet dreams. It can happen quietly. It can happen generationally.
This is not just a personal issue—it’s a communal one.

It’s about expectations, projections, and the pain of not being accepted for who we are.
But here’s the truth:

You are not responsible for someone else’s version of who you should be.
And no one else is required to meet yours.

Healing begins when we stop the cycle—when we put down the whip, both for ourselves and others.
